Traffic Officer Dragged on Car Bonnet Through Agartala, Driver Still at Large

In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns over the safety of law enforcement personnel in Tripura, a traffic police officer who is a recipient of the President's Police Medal was allegedly dragged for a considerable distance on the bonnet of a moving car in broad daylight through one of Agartala's busiest roads before being thrown onto the road by the driver, who then fled the scene.
According to reports, the incident occurred at the busy Battala traffic point yesterday evening when Traffic Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Biplab Dutta attempted to stop a Maruti Suzuki Baleno (Registration No. TR03M-0775) for an alleged traffic violation. Instead of complying, the driver allegedly accelerated the vehicle with the officer still on the bonnet.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle sped through the congested Battala area, passed the Battala Police Outpost, and continued towards the West Pratapgarh Steel Foot Bridge. The driver reportedly applied sudden brakes near the bridge, causing ASI Dutta to fall onto the road before escaping with the vehicle.
The injured officer sustained injuries and was taken for medical treatment. Fortunately, he escaped with his life despite the dangerous ordeal.
The Traffic Police have lodged a formal complaint at West Agartala Police Station, and an investigation has been initiated. Although the vehicle involved has reportedly been identified, the accused driver had not been arrested at the time of filing this report, triggering questions over the pace of the investigation.
Police officials are examining CCTV footage from the area and collecting witness statements to trace and apprehend the accused.
The incident has revived memories of another alarming case that occurred nearly two years ago, when Traffic Constable Piyush Ghosh was allegedly abducted by a truck driver while performing traffic duties. He was later rescued safely.
The recurrence of such incidents has raised serious concerns over the growing audacity of traffic violators and the increasing risks faced by police personnel enforcing the law on public roads.
