Five companys keen to invest Rs 726 crores in Tripura tea sector

Tripura’s tea industry sector comprising altogether 53 functional gardens and a labour force of over fourteen thousand has received tentative offers of investment of Rs 726 crores. Altogether five tea companys-three from Tamil Nadu and one each from Karnataka and West Bengal-have evinced keen interest in investing capital in launching new gardens, tea producing factories , branding, tea estate modernization and tea tourism.
This was disclosed by the chairman of the Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) Samir Ghosh in an interactive session with the media. He said that the tea industry in Tripura has a history of 110 years as the industry had been launched in the year 1916 during the rule of Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya and since then it has gradually flourished , crossing one milestone after another. During the past eight years since 2018 the industry has grown remarkably, Samir Ghosh said . Samir said that development in transport and communication and improvement in law and order situation have fuelled interest of investors in the tea industry. He asserted that the state government through industry department has already signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the investors in tea sector.
The matter of private investment in Tripura is set to get a fillip in the business summit slated to commence in the international fair ground at Hapania tomorrow . The two day summit is expected to result in a large number of MOUs being signed by investors from outside with the state government.
