The Tripura government has launched a pilot project to introduce a paperless hospital system as part of its efforts to digitise healthcare services, with plans to extend the initiative to other government hospitals if the experiment proves successful, Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after a government programme, Saha said the project has been introduced on a trial basis at a newly constructed hospital and will be reviewed before being implemented elsewhere.

"We are starting this project on a pilot basis. If it is successful, the paperless system will be introduced in other hospitals across the state," he said.

The chief minister said the government has already expanded digital governance across several sectors, including the state cabinet and the three-tier panchayat system, and is now working to bring hospitals under the same framework.

He said the objective is to gradually establish a paperless governance system across government departments to ensure faster, more transparent and efficient public service delivery.

Responding to a query on generic medicines, Saha said the government is keen to promote their use in the state but availability remains a challenge as not all medicines are currently produced in generic form.

"The use of generic medicines should begin as early as possible. However, some medicines are not available in generic form. The government is examining how those medicines can be procured," he said.

The chief minister said the government is simultaneously focusing on modernising healthcare infrastructure through digital initiatives while ensuring that affordable medicines become more accessible to the public.

He said the government would continue to assess the outcome of the paperless hospital pilot project and take necessary steps to improve the availability of generic medicines in the state.

There was no immediate response from any other stakeholder on the announcements.
