The Tripura government on Tuesday said a team of officials from the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) would undergo specialised training in Jaipur to develop a long-term solution to recurring server failures that disrupted prepaid smart meter services and triggered protests across several parts of the state.
The announcement came a day after widespread demonstrations and road blockades were reported from Teliamura, Dharmanagar and Kailashahar, where consumers alleged they were unable to recharge their prepaid electricity meters because of prolonged server failures, resulting in power disconnections and severe inconvenience.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said the government had already implemented temporary measures to address the issue while working on a permanent solution.
"Teliamura has witnessed server failures in the case of prepaid meters. We have made temporary fixes, but to chalk out a long-lasting solution, a special team of officials is leaving for Jaipur, Rajasthan, for server-related training. I feel that in the future, no such problems will be faced," Nath told reporters.
The most intense protest took place in Teliamura, where residents blocked the National Highway after claiming they had been unable to recharge their prepaid meters for nearly three days. Protesters alleged that electricity supply was disconnected despite repeated attempts to recharge and demanded restoration of power until the server issue was resolved. They also suggested that electricity charges be adjusted through the previous billing system as an interim arrangement.
Police and central paramilitary personnel were deployed to clear the highway blockade. Protesters alleged that police resorted to a lathi-charge after they refused to withdraw the agitation, leaving several demonstrators, including women, injured. Officials led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate later held discussions with the protesters.
Similar complaints were reported from Dharmanagar, where consumers alleged that server failures at electricity offices had continued for nearly a week, disrupting prepaid meter recharges and other services. Reports of technical problems also emerged from Kamalasagar. The disruption has renewed concerns over the reliability of the prepaid smart meter system and the need for robust backup mechanisms to prevent essential services from being affected during technical failures.
