Congress targets Tripura govt over smart meters, power supply and law and order

The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Tuesday criticised the state government over the smart electricity meter project, power supply, law and order, and healthcare, alleging administrative failures in several sectors.

Addressing a press conference at the Pradesh Congress headquarters here, party spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty alleged that the smart meter project was resulting in wasteful public expenditure and causing inconvenience to electricity consumers. He claimed that the existing smart meter system was faulty and was being operated in a manner detrimental to public interest.

Chakraborty also alleged that server-related problems had disrupted electricity services in several parts of the state, including Dharmanagar and Teliamura. He said consumers were facing difficulties in paying electricity bills and accessing related services due to the technical issues.

The Congress spokesperson also raised concerns over the law and order situation in the state, alleging an increase in criminal activities. Referring to recent seizures of narcotics, he claimed that while large quantities of drugs were being recovered, stringent action was not being taken against those allegedly involved in the organised networks behind the trade.

The party also expressed concern over the condition of healthcare services in the state.

Referring to the recent theft of donation money at the Ram Mandir in Agartala and incidents of alleged anti-social activities in Bishalgarh, the Congress urged the government to take effective measures to improve the law and order situation.

The party reiterated its demand for withdrawal of the smart meter project, rollback of the enhanced electricity tariff and improvement in power supply services.

Sadar District Congress president Tanmoy Roy and party treasurer Shyamal Pal were also present at the press conference.

There was no immediate response from the state government to the allegations.
