Tripura tea sector eyes Rs 726 crore investment; transport subsidy issue delays auction centre

Tripura's tea sector is set to attract proposed investments worth Rs 726 crore, with four private firms expressing interest in expanding operations in the state's tea industry, Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) Chairman Samir Ranjan Ghosh said on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference, Ghosh said the investment proposals would be formalised through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during the Destination Tripura Business Conclave scheduled for July 9 and 10.
He said the proposed investments are expected to generate around 4,000 employment opportunities and described them as the biggest investment initiative in Tripura's tea sector so far.
According to a TTDC statement, the interested companies are Monoworld Recycling Private Limited, Itibachak Barta Foundation, Infidirect Tech Solutions Private Limited and NDR Infrastructure Private Limited.
NDR Infrastructure has proposed an investment of Rs 500 crore for developing integrated tea estates, MSME units, value-addition facilities and an export facilitation hub. Monoworld Recycling has expressed interest in investing Rs 100 crore for tea sector development, while Itibachak Barta Foundation has proposed another Rs 100 crore for modernisation of tea gardens and factories, development of small tea grower clusters, research, skill development, digital technology adoption, branding, marketing and tea tourism.
Infidirect Tech Solutions plans to invest Rs 26 crore for operating TTDC tea estates under a lease or public-private partnership model and for establishing tea blending and packaging units.
Speaking about the proposed tea auction centre in the state, Ghosh said all necessary infrastructure, including office space and warehouses, has already been put in place. However, the launch is awaiting resolution of a transport subsidy issue raised by prospective buyers.
"The buyers have sought transport subsidy from the state government. The government is examining the proposal positively, and we hope the issue will be resolved soon so that the auction centre can become operational," he said.
He said Tripura tea is currently marketed through auction centres in Assam and West Bengal. Meetings with buyers in both states are scheduled shortly to discuss the operational roadmap for the proposed auction centre in Tripura.
Ghosh also said around 20,000 workers are engaged in tea gardens across the state and currently receive a daily wage of Rs 204. He noted that the wage has been revised several times since 2018, compared to Rs 105 per day before that period.
