High court draws contempt proceedings against six accused in Badal Shil murder case, fines all

Coming down heavily on the willful non-appearance in high court defiance of specific order, the single bench of the high court of Tripura Justice Bishwajit Palit imposed a fine of Rs 2 thousand each on all six accused in the daylight murder of slain CPI (M) leader and candidate for south Tripura ‘Zilla Parishad’, Badal Shil in the year 2024 at Raj Nagar area under Belonia subdivision. In the event of non-payment of the fine within next fifteen days the six accused shall serve one more month of imprisonment.

Giving details of the case sources in the high court said that Badal Shil (49), a retrenched 10,323 group of teachers and local leader of CPI (M) in Raj Nagar area under Belonia subdivision had entered the fray for south Tripura ‘Zilla Parishad’ in the elections held in July that year. While campaigning for the election in Chittakhola market Badal Shil was assaulted by a gang of BJP miscreants on July 12 and breathed his last on the next day while under treatment in GBP hospital , Agartala. All six accused in the case had been arrested by police but the additional district and session judge had granted them bail on July 25 in defiance of explicit legal provisions.

Badal Shil’s daughter Pallabi had challenged the bail order in high court and the high court bench cancelled the bail order on September 26 last year and ordered all the accused to surrender to court by October 7 . But the accused persons did not abide by the high court order and finally surrendered on October 27 last year. Interestingly , slain Badal Shil’s daughter Pallabi again filed a contempt case against her father’s six killers and a notice was issued by the high court in this regard against the accused persons. As the case began the six murder-accused failed to furnish satisfactory reply as to why they had failed to comply with the order . Finally the single bench of the high court headed by Justice Bishwajit Palit imposed a fine of Rs 2 thousand each on all six accused with the rider that in case of non-payment of the fine within next fifteen days all of them shall serve one more month of rigorous imprisonment.

Sources said that the contempt case on behalf of Badal Shil’s daughter Pallabi had been fought by senior advocate Purushottam Roybarman and his juniors Samarjit Bhattacharjee and Kaushik Nath. However, all the six accused in the murder case of Badal Shil are already in jail.
