Serious allegations have surfaced against police personnel after a suspected cannabis trafficker allegedly escaped from the custody of the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Belonia Railway Station on Tuesday morning. Eyewitnesses, particularly local auto-rickshaw drivers present at the station, have accused certain police officials of assisting the suspect's escape through alleged financial dealings.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and raised questions about the conduct of law enforcement agencies in the area. Local residents have demanded a high-level investigation into the matter.
According to eyewitness accounts, a vehicle bearing registration number TR07G02267 was intercepted by GRP personnel after its movements appeared suspicious. During a search of the vehicle, police allegedly recovered several kilograms of cannabis from a bag. While three occupants of the vehicle reportedly managed to flee from the spot, one individual was apprehended along with the seized contraband.
Witnesses claim that approximately 20 to 25 minutes after the detention, Sub-Inspector Premjit Roy of Belonia Police Station and IB personnel Nepal Nama arrived at the railway station in a police vehicle while dressed in civilian clothes. They were allegedly accompanied by other police personnel.
According to the allegations, the detained individual and the recovered cannabis were then taken inside the GRP police station. Members of the public were reportedly prevented from entering the room and were informed that "nothing had happened."
Eyewitnesses further alleged that after some time, SI Premjit Roy, IB personnel Nepal Nama, and other GRP staff exited the room. Merely two to three minutes later, the detained suspect allegedly ran out of the GRP station premises and escaped. Local residents and auto-rickshaw drivers reportedly attempted to chase him, but they claim that police personnel made no visible effort to stop or pursue the fleeing suspect.
The eyewitnesses have alleged that the escape was facilitated through financial transactions and collusion involving certain police personnel. They further claim that the suspect's escape was captured on camera by journalists present at the scene.
