Officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday conducted searches at two houses in a border village under Sepahijala district as part of an investigation linked to alleged illegal financial transactions and suspected narcotics-related activities, sources said.
The searches were carried out in Kazir Tilla area of Kulubari village under Sonamura subdivision, close to the India-Bangladesh border.
According to local sources, ED officials, accompanied by personnel from Sonamura Police Station, arrived in the area early in the morning and conducted searches at the residences of two persons identified as Suman alias Aman Hossain and Jasim Uddin.
Officials remained in the area for most of the day and carried out verification and inquiry-related activities at multiple locations, sources said.
During the operation, access to and from the immediate vicinity of the houses was restricted while the searches were underway. The development drew the attention of local people in the border locality.
Sources said the action was undertaken on the basis of allegations relating to possession of unaccounted money and suspected involvement in the illegal trade of narcotic substances. Investigators were also understood to be examining possible links with other individuals and networks operating in the region.
The houses searched are located near the international border, with the border fencing situated behind the properties. Security deployment in the area was also intensified during the operation, local sources said.
The searches come amid continuing enforcement action by central agencies in border areas of the state. In the past, the ED had conducted operations at multiple locations in Sonamura subdivision in connection with different investigations.
