Even though the minister for tribal welfare Bikash Debbarma has earned kudos by persuading the surrendered militants to withdraw their highway blockade programme, trouble is brewing in his own constituency . The tribal and non-tribal people in Krishnapur, the constituency from where Bikash was elected in 2023, are seething with anger over a severe water crisis in almost the entire constituency . They have not yet decided on any agitational programme over the issue but source from Bhoomihin colony area of the constituency said that ,besides other habitations, the 70 families settled in the Bhoomihin colony have been suffering from a severe crisis of drinking water over the past four months.
“There are other problems , specially in the sphere of connectivity , lack of MGNREGA works, lack of roads and shortage of teachers etc but the drinking water crisis is the most serious problem now ; earlier the government used to supply water by tankers but now this has also become irregular ; the situation is critical now and there will be an eruption of organized protests” said Narayan Shukldas , a resident of Bhoomihin colony. A big tubewell was set up in the area in 2024 but this has gone out of order long ago and now almost all the sources of water have dried up.
Sources from the Krishnapur area also said that after winning the assembly polls in 2023 the minister has lost contact with the common people of his constituency and this is further fuelling discontent in the entire constituency . This was reflected in the debacle suffered by his own son in law in the ADC polls in the month of April. Sources said that unless the minister renews his contact with people and comes forward to resolve their day-to-day and most vital problems , he will have to face serious problems in the next assembly polls scheduled to come off in early 2028.
