Seven forest personnel were injured and two government vehicles damaged after alleged timber smugglers attacked a forest department team during an operation against illegal teak wood transportation in North Tripura's Kanchanpur subdivision.

The incident occurred late Tuesday night in the Chandipur area when forest officials launched a special drive following information about the smuggling of government-owned teak wood. According to forest department sources, a group of suspected smugglers allegedly attacked the team with sharp weapons, spears and sticks while they were attempting to intercept the timber.

The attackers also vandalised two forest department vehicles before fleeing from the spot, reportedly taking away two vehicle-loads of teak wood.

The injured personnel were rescued by a police team from Kanchanpur police station and shifted to Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Hospital. Sources said some of the injured officials sustained serious injuries.

The forest department has lodged a complaint with the police, and an investigation has been initiated to identify and arrest those involved in the attack.
