Tripura’s leading businessman and entrepreneur Ratan Saha, elder brother to chief minister Dr Manik Saha, has been elected as the new president of Eastern India Motion Pictures Association which controls film production and studio management in Calcutta’s Tollygunge. He was however elected as the interim president by voice vote , pending a full-fledged election . The election became necessary because of the electoral defeat suffered by former Trinamool minister of West Bengal, Arup Biswas who controlled everything related to Tollygunge with an iron hand amidst allegations of corruption and extortion.

Sources said that Ratan Saha himself has been a film producer of repute and founder of SSR Cinema Chains which runs multiple movie theatres in Calcutta and Agartala. His election has been celebrated in Agartala which is his home town. The announcement regarding Ratan Saha’s election to the coveted post was made by his son Sandeep Saha and the announcement followed the walk-out in a huff by the Trinamool agent and ex-president Piya Sengupta who had objected to the proceedings and the presence of alleged non-members. In the wake of Piya Sengupta’s walk-out the meeting restarted in presence of police personnel and the members present elected Ratan Saha to the post unanimously.
