A controversy has erupted in Tripura after serious allegations of financial fraud were levelled against the owners of the Facebook-based news platform Rashtriya Samachar. According to a complaint reportedly submitted at Kamalpur Police Station, the channel’s owner, Nibedita Chakraborty, and her husband, Ram Chakraborty, have been accused of allegedly collecting around Rs 80,000 from the family of late Ashish Das of Surma Assembly Constituency on the pretext of helping them secure justice.
A copy of the complaint, which is circulating on social media, mentions that an FIR was sought under Sections 308, 351, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The complainant alleged that the accused approached the bereaved family claiming they would publicize the issue through their media platform and help them obtain justice. It is further alleged that money was transferred to an account belonging to the complainant’s daughter in multiple installments.
The complaint claims that financial assistance was sought in the name of legal expenses, media campaigning, and other related matters. The family has alleged that despite repeated demands for repayment, the money was not returned, leading them to approach the police.
The issue has since gained traction across social media platforms, with users debating the authenticity of the allegations and questioning the role of digital media channels in handling sensitive public issues.
However, Rashtriya Samachar editor Nibedita Chakraborty has strongly denied all allegations. In her reaction, she stated that the accusations being circulated are completely fabricated, politically motivated, and part of a larger conspiracy.
According to Chakraborty, the controversy emerged after her platform exposed corruption involving BJPs certain influential individuals. She alleged that those whose corrupt activities were exposed are now attempting to malign her image through false propaganda. She also claimed that the same group was allegedly involved in a previous attack on her residence.
“The allegations are entirely baseless and designed to defame us. Those behind the campaign are upset because Rashtriya Samachar exposed their corruption,” Chakraborty reportedly said.
At present, police authorities have not officially confirmed the status of the complaint or whether a formal case has been registered. No official statement has yet been issued by Kamalpur Police Station regarding the matter.
The incident has triggered widespread discussion about accountability, ethics, and transparency in social media-based journalism and public fundraising activities in Tripura. Observers say a fair and impartial investigation will be crucial to establish the truth behind the competing claims and allegations.
