The resounding BJP victory in West Bengal assembly elections, propelled by a massive consolidation of Hindu votes in the party’s favour has evoked conflicting reactions in neighbouring Bangladesh-a major beneficiary of population export to and infiltration into India . It was on May 4 when early trends in the counting of votes clearly indicated a BJP sweep at the cost of the Muslim and Bangladesh friendly Trinamool regime, a ruling BNP MP Akhtar Hossain in Dhaka expressed grave concern over the possible push-back of Bangladeshi infiltrators and Rohingiyas living illegally in West Bengal by the new government. “This inevitable push-back may create a crisis-like situation in Bangladesh and we must prepare to face this ; the government should also be careful” said Akhtar Hossain.
However, the BNP officially welcomed the results and expressed the hope that the victory of BJP may lead to improvement in bilateral relations and a solution to the long-pending Teesta river water sharing problem. The press secretary of BNP party Azizul Baree Helal in a statement made yesterday congratulated Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on his party’s victory in the West Bengal elections and hoped that the relations between the two countries will improve. “We can not deny the fact that it was Mamata Banerjee , erstwhile chief minister of West Bengal, who had stalled a solution to the Teesta river water sharing problem ; now we can hope that the new government will resolve the problem which is vital for Bangladesh” said Azizul Baree Helal. But the reaction in Pakistan provides a study in contrast with prominent journalists and Ýoutubers’ lamenting the strengthening of Modi’s sphere of internal influence including the unstated problem, for Pakistan in smuggling in terrorist elements , arms , ammunition and fake currency to India via the open border in West Bengal. However, officially the Pakistan government has not yet made any comment on this.
Meanwhile, sources from Banglaldesh said that there is a suppressed sense of jubilation among the persecuted Hindu minorities in Bangladesh over the BJP victory in West Bengal. Speaking on condition of anonymity a prominent minority voice from Dhaka said that they had lost all hopes of securing any succour from India because of the ‘overtly anti-Hindu and pro-Muslim policies and practices of Mamata government over the past fifteen years’. He said that since December 18 last year altogether 26 innocent Hindu minority residents of Bangladesh have been killed by the communal zealots among Bangladeshi Muslims, many families have lost their sole earning members and there is no hope for justice . “We always look up to India as the only safe haven for us but Mamata and the so-called secular brigade of politicians were destroying this ;now we have a flicker of hope “ said the Hindu minority leader from Dhaka.
