Two meat sellers were allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated by villagers in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Tuesday over accusations of selling beef as mutton to members of the local Hindu community.

The incident occurred at Ranchi Tilla under Jalai gram panchayat in Kailashahar. The accused, identified as Mansa Munda and Sujit Bhumij, are reportedly local residents engaged in small-scale meat trade.

According to local accounts, suspicions had been growing over the nature of meat sold by the duo. On Tuesday, villagers allegedly caught them while slaughtering cows, following which tensions escalated.

A group of villagers reportedly assaulted the two men and forcibly shaved their heads, terming it an act of atonement. They were also allegedly compelled to apologise publicly in front of locals.

Sources claimed that under pressure from the crowd, the accused admitted to misrepresenting beef as mutton for a prolonged period. The incident drew a large gathering at the spot, creating tension in the locality.

There was no immediate confirmation on whether police were informed or if any formal complaint had been lodged in connection with the incident.
