In presumably a case of mistaken identity, a group of BSF jawans yesterday opened fire upon a BJP supporter in Boxanagar yesterday. The injured youth is now under treatment in GBP hospital and his condition is stated to be critical. Sources from Boxanagar said that Ikramul Hossain (28), a BJP supporter of Dakshin Para area in Boxangar assembly constituency in Sonamura subdivision, had taken part in a victory rally of BJP on the occasion of the party’s massive success in the just-concluded election to the West Bengal state assembly. He raised slogans in favour of BJP in the procession and later listened to speeches of local leaders of the party.
But as he was returning home alone a group of BSF jawans on patrol near the gate no-180 under the border outpost (BOP) challenged him. But before he could reply to their queries one of the jawans opened fire and Ikramul fell on the ground. Even as the BSF jawans retreated, possibly having realized their mistake , the local people vented their ire and shifted Ikramul firs to Boxanagar primary health centre from where he was referred to the GBP hospital . Sources said that Ikramul is battling for life in the GBP hospital.
