The hundreds of patients in GBP hospital continue to be adversely affected by polluted drinking water as well as infections caused by mosquitoes and flies bred in droves in unclean drains . Sources among relatives of patients said that the situation has been going from bad to worse because of the complete indifference of the authorities to the extremely unhygienic conditions prevailing in the hospital , specially near its water tank.
Giving details sources said that there is a big water tank near the morgue of the hospital but just below it the space has become an open urinal in the sense that hundreds of people daily unburden themselves at the foot of the water tank . This not only spread an unbearable foul odour all through the hospital but also causes rapid infection among patients. Besides, the top of the overhead water tank is full of moss all around and a virtual jungle has been created on it and this pollutes the water supplied to all the patients and staff of the hospital . Naturally the water tank itself and the ground below it which is an open urinal like point have become a breeding ground for virus , bacteria and diseases caused by them but the authority of the hospital remain completely indifferent to the pathetic condition.
To worsen matters, there is no proper drainage system in the space between the water tank and the old super speciality building . The drain there always remains water-logged with water oozing out of the morgue , uncleared drain water , accumulated urine flow from below the water tank etc. A horrible condition prevails there all the time . This apology of a drain is a fertile breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies that always invade the ward having patients in the hospital and spread infections. Sources said that the authority running the hospital is aware of what is happening but shows no interest in taking any remedial action .
Apart from this, the senior citizens who visit the hospital in ‘ABHA’ centre face severe constraints in having their names registered as there is no separate queue for them. There is indeed a counter manned by three men and three ill-behaved women in the ‘ABHA’ centre but there is absolutely no separate facility for senior citizens or even the physically handicapped . When a physically handicapped patient or senior citizen inquires of the three men and women each about separate place for them , they point out that the counter is meant for women only . Worse , the three women in the counter are so ill-behaved that when any senior citizen raises question over lack of a space for their category in the queue, the women or girls simply growls at them and assert that there is no such separate facility for senior citizens even though, as per rules framed by Centre, all hospitals and banks should have separate counters in hospitals, banks and other official spaces . For hospitals it is a must as only sick senior citizens visit hospitals for their purpose of registration for medical consultation. But there is nobody in the hospital authority to look into these matters.
