A video featuring Chitta Maharaj of Shanti Kali Ashram, widely regarded as a spiritual leader among tribal communities in the hill areas of Tripura, has gone viral once again on social media ahead of the upcoming ADC elections, triggering fresh political discussions across the state. In the video, Chitta Maharaj delivers a blunt and candid speech addressing the historical condition of tribal communities under the erstwhile royal regime. He claims that during the period of monarchy, tribal people in Tripura lived in extreme poverty and were largely neglected by the rulers.Referring to the pre-merger era, he highlights that Tripura was a princely state until its accession to India in 1949. He points out that around 184 kings ruled the state under the leadership of the Manikya dynasty, whose primary focus, according to him, was revenue collection and maintaining a luxurious lifestyle for the royal family rather than the welfare of common people.
The speech also references Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, noting that his ancestors were part of the long line of monarchs who ruled the state.Chitta Maharaj further claims that meaningful initiatives for tribal education began only during the leadership of Dasarath Deb, who played a key role in promoting educational access among indigenous communities. He adds that after the Left Front government came to power in Tripura, schools were established across tribal-dominated areas, significantly improving access to education. He also mentions that policies were introduced to provide government job opportunities to tribal youths who had passed Class V, presenting this as a major step toward social upliftment.
Criticizing recent political narratives, Chitta Maharaj questions claims that no development has taken place in Tripura over the past 70 years, calling such statements misleading and disconnected from ground realities. The resurfacing of this video has intensified political discourse in the run-up to the ADC elections, with various groups interpreting his remarks through their own ideological lenses. As the elections approach, the viral speech continues to fuel debate over Tripura’s historical legacy, governance, and the trajectory of tribal development in the state.
