Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday issued a strong warning against political violence, alleging that intimidation and coercion cannot be used to retain power, in an apparent attack on the Tipra Motha Party.

Addressing a public rally at Duski in Teliamura, Saha accused the regional party of adopting “double standards” by speaking of peace while allegedly engaging in acts of intimidation and political violence. “People will not accept such activities under any circumstances,” he said.

The rally was organised in support of BJP candidates Billo Jamatia from Maharani–Teliamura constituency and Rajesh Debbarma from Mandai–Pulinpur seat in the ongoing elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The Chief Minister further alleged that supporters of the rival party attempted to disrupt the programme by blocking people from attending the rally. He also claimed that incidents of violence, including firing, were reported during the day, though no independent confirmation of these claims was immediately available.

Referring to peace initiatives in the region, Saha said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made sustained efforts to restore stability in Tripura and the northeastern states. “This peace will not be allowed to be disturbed at any cost,” he added.

Asserting confidence in his party’s prospects, Saha said electoral victory cannot be achieved through fear or coercion. “If people react, those indulging in such activities will have no place to escape,” he said.

Among others present at the rally were BJP ST Morcha national president Sameer Oraon, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy and MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury.
