In a gruesome killing a young bride was beaten up and then burnt to death for giving birth to a girl child in her in-laws home in south Tripura. The bride’s parents have filed a FIR with the Belonia womens police station on last Friday.
According to details of the case available from Pashchim Muhuripur, the actual place of occurrence under Belonia police station, Monti Shil (23), daughter of Sadhan Shil of Purba Charakbai village under Baikhora police station, had been married in the year 2023 to jeep driver Swadesh Shil (26) , son of Shitol Shil of Pashchim Muhuripur. The bride’s family had given all that could in the form of dowry at the time of marriage. But still the bridegroom Swadesh Shil and his father Shitol Shil kept on pressing Monti for fetching more money from her poor parents but Monti refused to oblige, citing her family’s poverty.
It was in December 2024 that Monti had given birth to a girl child and from then on torture on her increased as the demand for money grew . Even as this was going on for more than a year and ultimately on February 18 Monti was severely beaten up with clubs and rods by her husband Swadesh Shil , father in Shitol Shil and other family member who tried to murder her by setting her ablaze after pouring petrol on her body. Monti had to be admitted to Pashchim Muhuripur primary health centre and her parents rushed to the health centre and found her in a critical condition with eighty percent burn injuries. Monti ultimately had to be rushed to Shantir Bazar subdivisional hospital and then to GBP hospital but she succumbed to her burn injuries on February 20.
Monti’s parents , Sadhan Shil and Meera Shil performed her obsequious rites after some time and then they filed a formal complaint with the Belonia womens police station yesterday accusing slain Moti’s husband Swadesh Shil, father-in-law Shitol Shil and other members of family of cold blooded and pre-planned murder . They said in the FIR registered that filing the complaint had been delayed by their preoccupation with religious rites and rituals that had to be performed for their daughter Monti post-murder . The police has taken up the case but no one has been arrested so far.
