In a drastic exposure of the widening schism in the fragile alliance with the CPI (M), the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), in a meeting, today, decided to contest the upcoming by-election to Dharma Nagar assembly constituency on its own as well as to put up candidates in all 28 elective seats in the ADC election scheduled to come off next month. The decision confirmed what senior party leader and sitting MLA Sudip Roybarman had told media persons yesterday within the premises of the state assembly. Sudip had expressed resentment over CPI (M)’s unilateral declaration of candidature for the Dharma Nagar by-poll without any consultation with the Congress that had contested the Dharma Nagar seat in 2023.

A meeting of the Pradesh Congress presided over by state president Asish Kumar Saha and attended among others by veteran MLAs and former presidents , Sudip Roybarman , Birajit Sinha and tribal leader Shabda Kumar Jamatya, decided that Congress will fight the by-election to Dharma Nagar seat on its own and put up candidates in all 28 elective seats of the ADC. The decision on the crucial electoral issues was unanimous .

Speaking to media persons at the end of the meeting, PCC president Asish Kumar Saha resented the CPI (M)’s unilateral and arbitrary declaration of nomination for the Dharma Nagar by-poll and asserted that in the 2023 assembly election the seat had been allotted to Congress. “As you all already know+ that the state CPI (M) leadership never contacted us before announcing nomination ; now we have decided to contest the polls on our own and we will also put up candidates for all 28 elective seats of the ADC ; this is the unanimous decision taken by the PCC “ said Asish. He exuded confidence that Congress candidates in the ADC as well as in the Dharma Nagar assembly by-election will perform well with support from the people fed up with the misrule of BJP all over the state. “During the past two years we have worked relentlessly all over the state including in ADC areas and we have received good response from all sections of the people; so we hope to perform well in the election” added Asish.
