Allegations of large-scale digital manipulation at petrol pumps have surfaced in Tripura, with a fresh case exposed at Ishan Chandra (IC) Nagar in Kadamtala under the Belonia subdivision of Tripura, located in South Tripura district.

According to reports, a consumer this morning requested petrol worth Rs.40 to be filled into a 500-gram water bottle. At the prevailing fuel price of Rs.97.97 per litre, the consumer should have received approximately 400 grams (0.4 litre) of petrol. However, on verification, it was found that even 300 grams of petrol had not been dispensed.

Initial observations suggest that in some cases, between 200 to 300 grams less petrol is being supplied per litre. If proven true, this indicates serious digital tampering of fuel dispensing machines, leading to systematic under-delivery.

The issue has reportedly intensified since yesterday, as petrol pumps across the state witnessed heavy rush amid global tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Panic buying and long queues have been observed at multiple fuel stations across the state including the state capital.

Taking advantage of the rush and urgency among consumers, some petrol pumps are allegedly engaging in digital manipulation of fuel meters. In the chaos and hurry, most vehicle owners and drivers do not question the quantity being dispensed.

Consumers allege that inadequate monitoring by the state’s Weights and Measures Department has allowed such practices to continue unchecked. The alleged fraud has raised serious concerns among motorists across Tripura, who may be unknowingly losing significant amounts of fuel and money.

If the allegations are substantiated after official verification, strict action under the Legal Metrology Act may be initiated against the erring petrol pump operators.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the Kadamtala incident. Meanwhile, citizens are urging immediate inspection drives across petrol pumps in the state to prevent further exploitation.
