The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday alleged that its joining programme at Lamprai market under Takarjala assembly constituency was disrupted due to threats and intimidation by supporters of the Tipra Motha Party.

Addressing media persons, BJP Tripura Pradesh president Rajib Bhattacharjee claimed that several people who were expected to join the party backed out at the last moment fearing reprisals. “Despite attempts to terrorise our workers and sympathisers, 90 voters from 25 families joined the BJP,” he said.

Bhattacharjee alleged that the rival party, which is in power in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, was trying to prevent the BJP from campaigning freely. He also criticised the slogan of ‘Thansa’, stating that unity should not be misused for political purposes.

The BJP leader claimed that the state government had allocated Rs 3,450 crore to the TTAADC in the current financial year and alleged that the ruling party in the council had failed to acknowledge the funds.

He further accused the Tipra Motha Party of remaining silent during the prolonged Left Front rule, alleging neglect of development in tribal areas. BJP general secretary Bipin Debbarma and other local leaders were present at the rally.
