Flower production in Tripura has increased by 332 per cent over the past seven years, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Saturday.
He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Centre of Floriculture and Landscaping at Gokulpur in Udaipur under Gomati district.
The minister said the state government has taken sustained initiatives since 2018-19 to promote floriculture in response to rising demand and improved returns for growers. Production of traditional flowers such as marigold, gladiolus and rose has gone up by 60 per cent during the period, while output from high-tech floriculture has increased by 124 per cent, he said.
Highlighting the state’s potential, Nath said Tripura’s soil conditions, adequate rainfall and sub-tropical climate are conducive to flower cultivation. Traditional varieties continue to have strong demand in local markets, while high-value flowers including anthurium, orchid and gerbera are being cultivated under protected conditions, he added.
According to the minister, farmers cultivating flowers on about 200 square metres of land are earning an average monthly profit of over Rs 10,000, with growers receiving remunerative prices in the local market.
He said infrastructure support has been strengthened with the construction of a 400 square metre arcadium and a 400 square metre hardening centre at Badharghat Garden. The newly inaugurated centre at Gokulpur has been developed at a cost of Rs 4.50 crore with assistance from the Public Works Department.
Nath further said a Centre of Excellence on Flowers is being developed at Lembucherra on around 65 kani of land under a joint initiative of the Centre and the state government. The facility will focus on cultivation of orchids, anthurium, gerbera, rose, chrysanthemum and leafy plants, and will provide quality planting materials and training to farmers, he added.
