Leader of Opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Chowdhury, yesterday launched sharp allegations against ministers of the ruling BJP government, claiming that several of them have accumulated huge properties and assets within a very short span of time.
Addressing a public meeting at Damchara Motor Stand in Panisagar, organized by the CPI(M) Sub-Divisional Committee, Chowdhury alleged that the slogan of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' has remained only on paper while real development has taken place only in the personal fortunes of a few ministers.
He specifically mentioned that Minister Bikas Debbarma, within just two and a half years, allegedly managed to acquire a flat worth crores of rupees in Delhi, a petrol pump, and a multi-storied house. He further claimed that another minister from Unakoti district, whose family was reportedly a BPL card holder till 2021, has seen his brother purchase land in Dharmanagar and Kailashahar worth crores of rupees during the last four years.
Chowdhury also alleged that several other ministers are already in the eyes of the public for creating massive assets and properties in an unusually short period of time, raising serious questions about transparency and integrity in governance.
The meeting was mainly organized to demand more constitutional and administrative powers for the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) and to mobilize support for the nationwide 24-hour strike scheduled on February 12.
Criticizing the BJP government, Chowdhury said that despite being in power for eight years, it has failed to fulfill major promises made to the people. He pointed out that the BJP had assured 50,000 government jobs annually but not a single year has seen such recruitment.
He further alleged that around 52,000 government posts are lying vacant in Tripura, including large numbers in the education, police and TSR departments. According to him, before the last assembly elections, the Finance Minister had promised to fill these vacancies, but no concrete steps have been taken so far.
The CPI(M) leader also expressed concern over rising drug addiction, unemployment and worsening economic conditions in the state. He called upon farmers, workers, daily wage earners and youth to unite and intensify democratic movements against the present government.
Prominent leaders including former MLA Amitabha Dutta, CPI(M) Panisagar secretary Ajit Das and MDC Rajendra Reang were also present at the meeting.
The allegations made by the Leader of Opposition have added fresh political heat in the state, with the ruling party yet to issue any official response.
