Tripura assembly felicitates 26 journalists including five seniormost ones, governor addresses

Tripura Legislative Assembly (TLA) authority currently headed by acting speaker Ram Prasad Paul today organised a beautiful programme in the council room to felicitate journalists including six seniormost ones who cover assembly proceedings and have been doing so for many years. The chief guest in the programme was the governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and other dignitaries who adorned the dias included the leader of the opposition Jitendra Chowdhury, minister for forest and science and technology Animesh Debbarma, veteran BJP MLA Rampada Jamatya, veteran Congress MLA Birajit Sinha, the deputy speaker Ram Prasad Paul and the secretary of the assembly A,K,Nath.
In the course of his speech the governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu highlighted the exalted status of the assembly as the highest pedestal of democracy and how members should conduct themselves. He asserted that the not only the house of elected members but the concept of democracy and republicanism itself come to nought unless the House is allowed to function and transact business in a normal with due solemnity. The governor also reminisced his experiences as MLA of Andhra Pradesh assembly to assert how positive participation in the proceedings by MLAs can lead to major positive changes in the interest of people. He also stressed the need for journalists to authentically report the proceedings of the assembly in the interest of awareness of people.
The leader of the opposition Jiten Chowdhury and the deputy speaker Ram Prasad Paul who has earned good reputation for running the house in a fair manner during his brief tenure so far as acting speaker highlighted the importance of media’s role in strengthening democracy through objective reporting of proceedings of the assembly. The minister of forest and science and technology Animesh Debbarma recalled personal anecdotes to focus on the crucial role played by media, the fourth pillar of democracy. He referred to his experiences as MLA since being first elected to the house in the year 2003. The secretary of the assembly A.K.Nath had given the opening speech welcoming all to the occasion. On behalf of the journalists veteran Sekhar Datta delivered a speech sounding a note of despair over the role of non-left opposition in reducing the functioning of parliament comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to a farce through stalling tactics.
The session of speeches were followed up by felicitation of journalists like Sekhar Datta, Sanjib Deb,Jayanta Bhattacharjee, Debraj Deb , Tanmay Chakraborty, photo-journalist Ranjan Roy and others. There was also a brief cultural programme with renowned artists of the state participating. At last the journalists and dignitaries as well as the assembly staff were treated to a sumptuous lunch.
