Tripura Flags Off Organic Scented Lemons to Kolkata, Eyes Wider National Market

Tripura on Monday took another step towards strengthening its presence in national agricultural markets as Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath flagged off a consignment of 15,000 organic scented lemons from Agartala to Kolkata.

The consignment was dispatched from Agartala Railway Station by the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency in collaboration with Baramura Organic Produces Company Limited. Nath said the lemons were cultivated by around 80 farmers across nearly 100 hectares in South Hadrai and Hawaibari areas of Khowai district.

Addressing the media, the minister said Tripura’s organic produce is increasingly finding acceptance outside the Northeast, reflecting the growing demand for chemical-free farm products in national markets. He said the initiative was facilitated under the state government’s ‘Prabashi Tripura’ programme, which aims to connect local producers with buyers beyond the state.

Highlighting the Centre’s focus on agriculture, Nath said strengthening farmers’ income and ensuring assured markets remain key priorities. He said another consignment of 15,000 scented lemons would be sent soon.

The minister noted that Tripura’s organic farming area has expanded from about 2,000 hectares before 2018 to over 20,000 hectares at present. He said the state government is working through farmer producer companies to ensure better price realisation and long-term market linkages for farmers.

Chief Whip and MLA Kalyani Saha Roy, Agriculture Secretary Apurba Roy and senior officials were present at the event.
