Crime chart in state not very comfortable despite DGP’s claim to the contrary

Even though DGP Anurag Dhankar’s claims of a marginal fall in overall crime rate in the year 2025 compared with previous years is borne out by statistical data , the real crime profile of the bygone year is not as comfortable as it appears to be . According to data provided the total number of rapes in the state in 2025 was 169 and this breaks down to over 14 rapes per month , not a comforting figure at all. But what remains a matter of more concern is that in the bygone year is that overall crimes against women in Tripura were 665 which means about 56 crimes every month including dowry disputes and other domestic humiliations.

Apart from this, the number of murders committed in the state in the year 2025 were 95-that is almost 8 murders a month while incidents of physical assaults overall were 828 which breaks down to 69 per month. There were 17 incidents listed as riots in the year 2025. The incidents of road mishaps and resultant deaths were also quite high as there were 597 road mishaps last year and the total death toll was 197 which means 43 road mishaps took place every month and the death toll in them was 16 per month on an average. Altogether 606 persons sustained injuries in the accidents that happened. Besides , there was a downslide in the number of criminal cases registered with the police in the year 2025, as compared with the figure of 2024 as claimed in the official data. This shows that in 2025 altogether 3698 criminal cases were registered with police where as the figure had been 4033 in 2024. This means a marginal fall by 8.30%.

However, sources in state police said that on the face of it the statistical data provided is correct but in many cases there are people who could not move the police for fear of retribution and the number is quite high. The police act only on the basis of registered cases and ,despite there being a provision in the BNS , almost no case is registered suo moto. The political circles in the opposition, specially the CPI (M) refused to accept the fact that there had actually been a fall in the crime rate in the state in the year 2025.
