Group clash in Fatikroy over extortion drive from timber smuggler,internet suspended for two days

In an unseemly incident this morning, several people belonging to two groups sustained minor injuries and at least four houses had been set on fire an by unruly mob over attempted extortion drive of one section of people and refusal to oblige by the driver of a truck that been carrying smuggled timer . A large force of Police, TSR , Assam Rifles and CRPF jawans have been posted on the troubletorn spot and the DM (Unakoti) Tamal Majumder as well as SP Abinash Ra who is currently in charge of Unakoti district continue to remain on the spot. The internet services have also been suspended for two days by DM’s order to prevent further escalation of communally motivated attacks.

Sources from Fatikroy in Unakoti district said that this morning a truck carrying smuggled timber had been passing through Shimultala area around 10-00 AM when it was stopped on the raod by members of a local club who tried to extort money from the ‘Momin’ driver of the vehicle in the name of a festival but the ‘Momin’ driver refused to oblige. In the course of arguments between both sides things hotted up and the driver, mildly roughed up by club members informed his smuggler owner of the club who sent a sizable number of fellow ‘Momns’ to create trouble and to have the block truck released.

This resulted in a clash and some persons on both sides sustained injuries while the locals of Shimultala set a number of houses belonging to ‘Momins’ on fire, After being informed the DM (Kailsahar) Tamal Majumder and SP (north) Abinash Rai who is temporarily in charge of Unakoti district rushed to the spot and tackled the situation by deploying additional forces from police, TSR, Assam Rifles and CRPF. Internet services in Fatikroy and nearby areas have been suspended for net two days and both the DM and SP are camping in the area.

Meanwhile , sources from Fatikroy said that security measures have been tightened all over Fatikroy, Kumarghat and areas connecting Agartala with north Tripura because the chief minister Dr Manik Saha who is in Kanchanpur in connection with a programme is scheduled to return by the affected route . Dr Saha has reached Kanchanpur by train this morning from Agartala to attend a rally and joining programme at Kanchanpur. Police sources from Kailasahar said that the situation is tense but under control and a number of arrests have been made.
