Tripura Chief Minister Prof Dr Manik Saha on Thursday described the Bharatiya Vikas Gramin Rozgar Mission Guarantee (BVGRAMG) Act as a historic initiative aimed at strengthening rural employment and creating durable infrastructure, asserting that the new law would bring greater accountability to employment guarantee programmes.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters here, the Chief Minister said the Act, which has already been passed by Parliament and received the President’s assent, seeks to overcome shortcomings of earlier schemes. “The opposition is trying to create unnecessary debate. We are here to inform people about the provisions and benefits of this Act,” he said.

Dr Saha said the legislation was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 16, 2025 by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and was subsequently cleared by Parliament before receiving presidential assent on December 21.

Highlighting key features, the Chief Minister said the Act enhances the employment guarantee to 125 days and introduces an unemployment allowance if work is not provided, along with compensation for delayed wage payments. He said the law focuses on decentralised planning at the gram panchayat level and prioritises creation of permanent assets in areas such as water conservation, rural infrastructure, livelihood generation and forest-related works.

Stating that nearly 75 per cent of the population lives in rural areas, Dr Saha said the Centre has committed over Rs 95,000 crore for the programme, marking a major push towards sustainable rural development.

Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman and BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee were present at the press conference.
