The Government Railway Police on Thursday arrested a Bangladeshi national along with an Indian woman from the Agartala Railway Station for allegedly facilitating illegal infiltration into India, police said.

The arrests were made around 3 pm near the main gate of the railway station following specific intelligence inputs. The Bangladeshi national was identified as Amir Hossain, 25, a resident of Sathkhira district in Bangladesh, while the Indian national was identified as Sultana Bibi, 24, hailing from Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal.

During preliminary interrogation, police said the duo confessed that Hossain had illegally entered Indian territory through the international border in Sepahijala district with the assistance of the woman, who allegedly acted as a tout. The two were reportedly attempting to travel further into the country when they were intercepted by GRP personnel.

A case has been registered at the Agartala GRP police station in connection with the incident. The accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946, and the Illegal Entry into India (Amendment) Act, 2000, police said.

Officials said further investigation was underway to determine whether the arrested persons were part of a larger network involved in illegal infiltration or human trafficking along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Police also said efforts were being made to trace other possible associates and identify the route used for the illegal entry.
