Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore’s consummate skill in selling dreams-albeit based on hollow rhetoric and cleverly disguised provocations-seemed to resonate with a huge crowd of tribal masses in the Swami Vivekananda ground-reincarnation of earlier Astabol ground-as he harped on this cliché of ‘Thansa’ while marketing his dream of greater Tripraland. Addressing a huge rally of the faithful, attended by regional political leaders from several states of northeast st including the Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, Pradyot cleverly alluded to the difficulties in securing space in the ground for the rally. “When Congress or the CPI (M) propose to hold a rally there is no problem but a regional party or the indigenous people want to organise rally here many problems crop up; we had to overcome lot of obstacles to hold this rally here today and we did this through ‘Thansa and now the rally is being held peacefully” said Pradyot.

Straying off his scripted speech Pradyot also took a dig at the media , implying that the media here do not give him and his party proper coverage and added that ‘tomorrow also you may see some twisted and tweaked version’. What he alluded to by this is that the media here are controlled by non-indigenous people who do not believe in political idol worship. Besides, toeing the line set by his preceding speaker, the Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma, Pradyot made an indictment of the national political parties, short of naming the BJP directly, asserting how Shiromoni Akali Dal in Punjab , Shib Sena in Maharashtra and Bodoland party in Assam have weakened over the years to buttress his case for keeping up the distinctive identity of Tipra Motha.

Pradyot also paid tributes to veteran Bijay Kumar Hrngkhawal who was present in the meeting and late and generous minded TUJS leaders, Shyama Charan Tripura, Nagendra Jamatya, Drau Kumar Reang, Debabrata Kolo and Rabindra Debbarma and said that they also had to face lot of difficulties even in meeting leaders in Delhi and Agartala. Visibly swayed by the huge turnout Pradyot moved from one part of the stage to another holding the microphone in hand and tried to convince people that ultimately his dream project of ‘Tipraland’ and ‘Greater Tipraland’ will be achieved to thunderous applause from the crowd. He rued the fact that the IPFT had failed to respond to his call to join the rally today. As part of a vain attempt to win over the religious minority Pradyot also indulged in a token appeasement by addressing a minuscule group of religious minority people by offering them ‘As salam alaikum’.

The Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma who had addressed the rally before Pradyot, had overwhelmed his host by addressing him as ‘Bubagra’ as also by predicting that ‘Bubagra’ will be the next ‘Maharaja’ of Tripura as his ancestors had been. Conrad also remained within bounds of restraint while outraging over the treatment meted out to youths and people of northeast in Delhi and other parts of the country. Today’s rally was also addressed briefly by James P.K.Sangma, working president of Meghalaya’s ruling NPP, Mmhonlumo Kikon, former minister of Nagaland, Daniel Langthasa, founder of Peoples Party of Assam, Ajoy Edwards, founder-president of Gorkha Party of Darjeeling, R.K.Meghen , senior leader of Manipur and Hemochandra Singh, former speaker of Manipur assembly. All of them exulted that despite linguistic , cultural and ethnic differences the parties and people of northeast have come closer by forming the ‘One Northeast , One Voice’ platform and all of them will struggle together to protect and further the vital socio-economic interests of people of northeast.
