The Khowai border has reportedly turned into a corridor of Bangladeshi infiltration over the last few months, raising serious concern among residents and security agencies. Since the regime change in Bangladesh last year, more than a dozen infiltration incidents have been reported in which Bangladeshi nationals were caught by local people while illegally crossing the border and handed over to the police.
Local sources alleged that these infiltrations are being facilitated with the connivance of a section of Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and human traffickers in exchange for money. Residents of border villages have demanded stronger and more transparent border vigilance to curb the growing menace.
Fresh tension gripped the Bachaiabari area under Khowai district on Monday, when two Bangladeshi nationals were reportedly helped by local brokers to enter Indian territory. The situation turned violent after locals intercepted them, suspecting illegal infiltration.
According to reports, the incident occurred under the Champahower Police Station when residents stopped a vehicle bearing registration number TR08 0690 near Nibaranbari locality. Two Bangladeshi nationals, identified as Sanjay Sarkar from Mohanmadpur in Comilla and Bikash Das from Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh, were found inside the car. Both had allegedly crossed into India through the Bidyabil border point of Khowai sector with the help of local agents.
Witnesses said the locals became suspicious of the duo’s behavior and stopped their car for questioning. When their Bangladeshi nationality was confirmed, a mob grew agitated, vandalized nearby property, and assaulted the two men. Both sustained serious injuries and were found lying unconscious at the spot.
Police from Champahower Station, led by the Khowai Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), rushed to the location and brought the situation under control after deploying additional forces. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The incident has sparked public outrage over alleged lapses by the BSF in preventing illegal infiltration across the Indo-Bangladesh border. Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation into both the infiltration and the mob violence. Search operations are underway to trace the local brokers involved in the cross-border movement and those who participated in the assault.
The situation in the area remains tense but under control following the deployment of security reinforcements. Locals have urged the authorities to strengthen border patrols and take strict action against those involved in human trafficking and security negligence.
