In a major breakthrough, Tripura Police on Sunday destroyed a large-scale cannabis plantation near the Assam border in North Tripura district — the first such operation in the region. Acting on a tip-off, personnel of the District Intelligence Branch (DIB) and Churaibari Police Station jointly conducted the raid in a remote hilly area of Katuachhara under Ward No. 2 of Balichhara ADC Village.
During the operation, around 5,000 cannabis plants were uprooted and destroyed. The estimated black market value of the contraband is around Rs 15 lakh. Though no arrests were made, police have launched an investigation to identify those involved in the illegal cultivation.
According to police sources, a local group had allegedly been cultivating and trading cannabis secretly in the area for a long time, but no major operation had been conducted there until now.
Churaibari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Debabrata Biswas said the raid was based on confidential information and more such operations will continue in the future. “Around 5,000 cannabis plants have been destroyed. We are investigating whether the land used for cultivation falls under forest department territory or private ownership,” he said.
Police believe the ongoing investigation will help identify the main network behind the illicit cultivation. Both the DIB and Churaibari Police confirmed that intensified operations will continue to curb such illegal activities in the district.
