The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (TPYCC) has demanded swift arrests of all those involved in the seizure of a huge consignment of banned cough syrup from Jirania railway station in West Tripura last month.

In a letter to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, TPYCC president Neel Kamal Saha termed the recovery of 1.07 lakh bottles of the prohibited syrup, valued at around Rs 5.4 crore, a serious reflection of the growing drug menace and misuse of railway infrastructure for trafficking.

The youth Congress alleged that despite the magnitude of the seizure, only one person had been arrested so far. It claimed that powerful racketeers with political backing were behind the smuggling network, which has turned Tripura into a key transit point for narcotics trade.

Saha urged the Centre to ensure a time-bound investigation, bring all masterminds to book, and strengthen surveillance at key transit routes to prevent such illegal consignments in future.
