Belonia womens PS OC Swapna Bhowmik selected as awardee of union home minister’s efficiency medal

In a morale booster for police officers of the state, the officer in charge of Belonia womens police station inspector Swapna Bhowmik has been nominated as a recipient of the union home minister’s efficiency medal this year in recognition of her service. The scientific officer of the Forensic Service cell of police, Indrajit Shil has also been selected for the prestigious award.

Inspector Swapna Bhowmic could not be contacted for her response to the official announcement of the award but sources in Belonia police said that inspector Swapna Bhowmik had arrested and got prosecuted an accused for abduction of a minor girl with exemplary speed. Giving details sources said that on September 14 last year a case of a missing minor girl from Motai under Belonia had been registered with the Belonia womens police station. As investigating officer inspector Swapna Bhowmik had arrested the abductor and rescued the minor girl within twenty four hours and filed a charge-sheet within forty seven days invoking POCSO act. It was on October 31 2024 that the Belonia court had constituted a fast-track bench and the case was concluded within 275 days. On the basis of strong evidence the court sentenced the accused to twenty years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs 10 thousand on the accused under the POCSO act and under section 137 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS). In addition the court had directed the accused and his family to pay Rs 2 lakhs to the victim minor girl.

Sources said that in recognition of inspector Swapna Bhowmik’s efficient handling of the case and initiative for speedy justice the union home ministry nominated her for the prestigious award. The award will be handed over to inspector Swapan Bhowmik and scientific officer Indrajit Shil in an official function soon in the Vigyan Bhawan of Delhi. The president Draupadi Murmu is likely to hand over the award to Swapna Bhowmik and Indrajit Shil.
