The 65th anniversary of Agartala’s Gobindra Ballav Panth (GBP) hospital , named after India’s first home minister and former UP chief minister G.B. Panth, has been celebrated today with a grand function . It was on this day in the year 1961 that the foundation stone of the GBP hospital, state’s main referral hospital , had been laid by Gobinda Ballav Panth who was then the union home minister and within a few years the construction of the entire hospital complex had been completed . At that time the launching of GBP hospital was an epoch making event as the state’s health service then had only a skeletal infrastructure. Since then the GBP hospital has come a long way through expansion of infrastructure, launching of new and modern services and establishment of the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) in the year 2005.

A commemorative function was held today in the conference hall of the hospital and AGMC with MLA Meena Rani Sarkar, the chairman of the patients welfare committee, as the chief guest . The other eminent personalities present on the occasion included health secretary Kiran Gittey , medical education director H.P.Sharma, AGMC principal Dr Anup Kumar Saha, NHM member-secretary Nupur Debbarma, blood transfusion council member secretary Dr Biswajit Debbarma and deputy superintendent of GBP hospital Dr Kanak Chowdhury.

In her speech MLA Meena Rani Sarkar expressed satisfaction over the progress made by the GBP hospital with addition of a large number of modern and updated facilities and hoped that this hospital would remain a beacon of light to the patients of Tripura. The health secretary Kiran Gittye dwelt on the crucial importance of the GBP hospital in the health service of the state and said that today itself the chief minister of the state Dr Manik Saha is signing a memorandum of co-operation between the GBP hospital and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi. Gittye expressed the hope that in the coming days the role of GBP hospital in rendering services to patients will further improve and will make it a leading hospital in the entire northeast and the government’s efforts to ensure this is always on. On the occasion of the founding day today a blood donation camp was held and fruits were distributed among patients.
