The annual four-day ‘Durga Puja’ festival, greatest public religious festival of the Hindus , passed off peacefully yesterday with the ritual immersion of the images of ‘Debi Durga’ and her retinue of lesser deities in the river Hawrah at the officially designated area of Dashami Ghat, west of Agartala . Since the immersion had to be rounded off within the span of the ‘Dashami Tithi’ the ritual immersion had actually started after 2-30 in the afternoon as enjoined by the almanac, specially for ‘Pujas’ that had been organised in households in compliance with all norms and rituals prescribed by the scripture. Amidst tight security provided by police and TSR jawans and standard arrangements made by Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) the immersion continued for long hours but the entire ceremony was peaceful and there was no untoward incident . By contrast with previous years, the noise pollution this year was much less as the clubs and organizers of community ‘Pujas’ kept from playing microphones and DJ sets with high decibel sound.
Similar reports of peaceful and smooth immersion in rivers of the state have poured in from all subdivisional and district towns like Sonamura, Udaipur, Belonia, Sabroom, Khowai , Teliamura, Ambassa , Kailasahar, Gandacherra, Dharma Nagar, Kanchanpur . All the major rivers of the state like Gomati , Muhuri, Pheni, Hawra, Khowai , Dhalai, Manu, Deo and Longai took in their laps the immersed images of the Mother Goddess. The members of all the communities living in the state cutting across religious and ethnic barriers took part in the festival in direct or indirect manner. Even though inclement weather interspersed with occasional rain partially marred the festive spirit among people there was no lack of enthusiasm. Highly placed sources in the government expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conclusion of the ‘Durga Puja’ festival and congratulated the people.
Meanwhile, the preparation is now in last stages for the ‘Mayer Gaman’ (Farewell to Mother) or a government sponsored carnival of immersion tomorrow. The ‘Mayer Gaman’ will commence from 4-00 PM tomorrow from in front of the Maharani Tulsivati Girls HS school and end up in the ‘Dashami Ghat’ area . All necessary arrangements including strict security have already been put in place and the chief minister Dr Manik Saha , AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder and a host of other VVIPs including the ministers will set the ‘Mayer Gaman’ or carnival rolling. This organised immersion in carnival like atmosphere had been initiated by the BJP government from the year 2018. All the clubs and social organizations keen to take part in the carnival will have to line up their vehicles carrying images of the Mother Goddess well ahead of the scheduled time of commencement at 4-00 PM on the roads leading from Ganaraj Chaumuhuni and Rabindra Bhawan Chaumuhuni up to MTV girls HS school.
