Dharmanagar, the headquarters of North Tripura, was shaken today by a shocking jailbreak as six notorious undertrial prisoners escaped from the Sub-Divisional Correctional Home.

The incident unfolded dramatically when the inmates attacked a jail guard and fled, leaving the guard minor injured. He has been admitted to the district hospital for treatment. CCTV footage later revealed glaring security lapses, with police personnel reportedly sitting in the opposite direction while on duty, allowing the inmates to strike from behind and escape.

The daring escape has thrown the administration into turmoil. Early in the morning, Northern Range DIG rushed to the correctional facility to take stock of the situation. Police teams have since launched a massive manhunt to capture the fugitives, and search operations are underway across the district.

This incident has spread panic among the residents of North Tripura. The shocking jailbreak is being compared to a similar incident in 2017, when a notorious criminal had escaped from Sabroom Sub-Jail. That facility was permanently shut down after the escape, and the government later shifted inmates to Belonia Jail. However, the Dharmanagar escape once again exposes the persistent security loopholes in Tripura’s correctional system.

Locals describe the event as a horrifying incident that has left North District residents deeply unsettled. Meanwhile, political observers note that even after the BJP came to power in 2018, jail escapes continue to plague the state’s prison administration.

Public outrage is rising, with demands for accountability, stronger vigilance, and urgent reforms to prevent a repeat of such dangerous incidents in Tripura.
