With the weather God frowning upon the festivities of his human devotees, this time around the five day ‘Durga Puja’ festival commencing from this evening is likely to be a partially dismal affair for ‘Puja’ enthusiasts and pandal hoppers. The rain Gods this year had been quite generous this year with their bounties from before the commencement of the monsoon but as yet there is no sign of their withdrawing their pour-in gifts. The overcast sky has been staring down from this morning , the day of ‘Sashthi’ when the Mother Goddess with her retinue of lesser deities come to visit the devotees , with intermittent rainfall marring the festive spirit, transactions and movements. In fact the sky God has resorted to a hole and corner policy manifested in periodic sunlights and occasional bursts of rain.
But the weather forecast for the five days of ‘Durga Puja’ has sounded alarm bells ringing as the latest pre-puja bulletin of the Indian Meteriological Department (IMD) has stated that during all four days of the ‘Durga Puja’ the weather will be partially rainy and inclement. There is no possibility of heavy rainfall but occasional sharp showers interspersed with lightning will mar the festivity . But the humidity will continue to trouble people and the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 35 degree Celsius.
The organizers of community ‘Pujas’ have taken precautionary measures with arrangement for covering pandals and saving minor infrastructures around pandals from damages likely to be caused by rainfall. Despite the threat posed by weather and possibility of rainfall and wind there is no let-up in ministers and VVIPs opening ‘Durga Puja’ pandals of clubs and social organizations in the capital town as well as in other parts of the state. For the moment the organizers as well as ordinary devotees are keeping their fingers crossed, praying for blessings of the Mother Goddess.
