The severity of unemployment problem in Tripura has sharply gone down over the past seven years since the BJP led government came to power in 2018. This is borne out by the statistical data provided by the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) under the central ministry of statistics and programme implementation. This has been stated in an official press release issued by the department of ICA in contradiction of a news item published in a local media outlet.
The press release said that in the year the unemployment rate at the national level had been 5.8% as against 10% in Tripura but in the following years this came down . In the year 2019-2020 the national average unemployment was 4.8% while in Tripura this came down to 3.2% because of policy of providing alternative employment and self –employment provided by the state government. The data for the year 2023-2024 shows that unemployment rate at the national level was 3.2% while in the state it was only 1.7% though in the previous year the same rate in the state had been a shade lower at 1.4%. Interestingly the data shows that unemployment in the state is higher in urban areas than in rural areas.
The press release pointed out that the number of class VIII passed youths registered in the employment exchange was 7010 in the year 2023-2024. It belies the contention made in the news item. It added that job fairs under the national career service scheme are being regularly held in the employment exchanges in the state.
