The Agartala Press Club, apex media body in the state, has strongly condemned a statement made by the newly appointed minister for Panchayat and higher education Kishore Barman identifying media as ‘enemy’. In an official statement the secretary of Agartala Press Club Roma Kanta De said that such a statement from a responsible minister is condemnable as the media in the state discharge their responsibilities in a fairm, transparent and objective manner . “Such statements are objectionable and undesirable because the media in the state never bow to any pressure and perform their responsibilities in a fair and transparent manner” said Roma Kanta . He demanded withdrawal of the statement against the media.

It was yesterday that the minister made the statement in the course of his speech in the Panchayati Raj institution in AD Nagar area of Agartala before elected representatives of the Panchayats. “We have been elected as MLAs, ministers, members of civic bodies and Panchayats but we must all remember that we have enemies ; these enemies may be from within our own party, opposition parties and even from the media , so we must be on guard against enemies” said Kishore Barman. This speech of the new minister for higher education became viral in social media almost immediately and evoked strong reaction.

Almost all the media houses including newspapers, TV channels, websites etc printed the objectionable speech of the minister with due importance . The media organizations and unions also condemned the statement of Kishore Barman. But the minister has so far maintained a stoic silence over the criticism of his comments.
