In a heart-rending incident two Hindus-an aged man and his son in law-were lynched to death by a demented ‘Momin’ mob in Burihat Battala village under Taraganj sub-district under Rangpur district on Saturday night-that is, on the night of August 09. In protest against the killing of the two innocent Hindus merely on suspicion and a cooked up charge the people in the area launched a road blockade programme but finally withdrew it upon assurance of action on the part of local police authority.

Giving details police sources said that on last Saturday night Ruplal Das (45) and his son in law Pradeep Das (23) (husband of niece), originally from a nearby place, had gone to Ghanirampur to meet and speak to a prospective bridegroom for his daughter by a van. After they had reached Battala on the Taraganj-Kazirhat road an irate mob confronted them with the charge of having lifted a van that had earlier been stolen from the area. Even before they could explain that they have come by their own van by showing papers etc the mob severely lynched them. In a bizarre coincidence a local van driver Alamgir Hossain of Pasharipara village and Mehdi Hasan of Burihat village had fallen unconscious, making the mob suspect Ruplal and Pradip had made them unconscious by feeding them toxic elements and both were lynched brutally.

After the lynching a group of local people took Ruplal to Taraganj health centre where he was declared ‘brought dead’ around 12-10 on Saturday night while Pradeep was taken to medical college hospital where he succumbed to injuries on Sunday morning. This morning slain Ruplal Das’s wife Bharati Rani filed a complaint with the Taraganj police station against the lynching of her husband and son in law demanding action. The officer in charge of Taraganj police station M.A.Faruq registered the case against seven hundred anonymous persons and asserted that an inquiry would be undertaken immediately to identify the actual culprits as well as to bring them to justice.
