The curse of child or under-age marriage has taken yet another toll as house-wife Sheuli Debnath (19) reportedly committed suicide at her in-laws home in Gokul Nagar Adarsha colony area under Kamala Sagar assembly constituency under Bishalgarh subdivision today. Shortly after her dead body had been brought to Bishalgarh subdivisional hospital there was tension over claims of suicide and the situation had to be quelled by police personnel who had rushed to the hospital after being informed of the commotion.
Sources from Bishalgarh said that Sheuli Debnath (19) , daughter of Shankar Debnath of Malaynagar area of Agartala, had been socially married to Raju Debnath (32) , son of Gopal Debnath of Gokul Nagar Adarsha colony in Kamala Sagar assembly constituency three years ago . But the marriage was troubled as two months after the marriage Sheuli had to spend long eleven months in her parental home because of ill-treatment by her husband and in-laws. This was followed by a round of reconciliation talks between the two families and Sheuli again returned to her husband’s home but the conjugal relation was never smooth and she used to be ill-treated by her in-laws as well as the husband.
Sources said that this morning Sheuli was reportedly seen hanging from a fan fitted on the ceiling of her room and she was brought to Bishalgarh hospital by her husband Raju Debnath and father in law Gopal Debnath without any information to Sheuli’s parents. After being informed of his daughter’s alleged suicide Sheuli’s father Shankar Debnath rushed to Bishalgarh and loudly complained that his daughter had been murdered by her husband and in-laws. There was tension in the hospital as the doctor on duty had been taking inordinately long to come and treat the patient . Even as the tension between the two families was on the point of degenerating into open fight, a police contingent arrived and disengaged the two quarrelling sides. However police registered a case of unnatural death and said that Sheuli’s death would be thoroughly investigated.
