Tripura Info, the state's oldest and most credible news portal, has issued a strong public statement expressing concern over the alarming rise of unprofessional individuals infiltrating the field of journalism in Tripura. The portal has announced the launch of a social awareness movement aimed at preserving the dignity and ethics of journalism in the state.
In its official declaration, Tripura Info highlighted recent developments where individuals with no background in journalism have suddenly assumed significant editorial roles in reputed publications. A recent example includes the appointment of a income tax lawyer, who has never been associated with journalism, as the 'news editor' of a prominent daily, following the unfortunate death of its professional news editor. This appointment, reportedly enabled by manipulation within the trust that runs the publication, has sidelined experienced journalists, raising serious ethical questions.
Tripura Info also drew attention to another disturbing trend: a self-styled media baron originally a lawyer and the owner of a so-called "international" cable TV network, is now positioning himself as the unofficial guardian of Tripura's media. This individual has allegedly made baseless and defamatory claims against key public figures, including calling the Deputy Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly a drug dealer and accusing the owner of a newly opened private medical college of cattle theft-all without evidence. Such claims, when amplified through self-owned media platforms, create an atmosphere of fear and misinformation.
These developments, according to Tripura Info, reflect a dangerous erosion of professional values in journalism, where personal and political motives are taking precedence over factual reporting and public accountability. Even senior constitutional figures, including the Chief Minister, former Chief Ministers, Ministers, Former Minister’s, MLAs, the Speaker, and the Deputy Speaker, have not been spared from defamatory attacks by these so-called media figures.
As a result, Tripura Info has revised its editorial policy. While the portal previously refrained from highlighting unethical practices by other media outlets, it has now decided to actively counter falsehoods, blackmail-driven advertisements, and character assassinations targeting innocent individuals, officials, and elected representatives.
Tripura Info urges the public to report any such unethical media activity-whether it's the spread of fake news, defamation, or extortion in the name of journalism-by contacting the portal at 0381-2413946. WhatsApp number 9436122741.
“We stand for truth, and we are committed to protecting the sanctity of journalism in Tripura. It’s time to rise and resist the decline in media ethics,” the statement concluded. For further updates, visit: www.tripurainfo.com
