The attempts of the state government’s power department to install smart metres in households for domestic consumers have already evoked a sharp reaction from the people all over the state. The opposition CPI (M) is trying to capitalize on this issue by organizing protest marches and rallies to have the move withdrawn.

As part of the party’s anti-smart metre stand the Bishalgarh subdivisional committee of the CPI (M) today organised a massive procession and a meeting calling for immediate cessation of the move to install smart metre in public interest. The procession had started from the district headquarter of the CPI (M) located in ‘Durgadas Shikdar Memorial House’ , moved through the Bisramganj market and then returned to the party headquarter where a meeting was held .

The meeting was addressed by the former finance minister Bhanulal Saha, CPI (M)’s subdivisional committee secretary Partha Pratim Majumder and other leaders. While addressing the meeting the CPI (M) leaders demanded withdrawal of the decision to install smart metres, revocation of the order increasing water tax and power tariff . In his speech Bhanulal Saha said that the BJP government of the state has been putting unbearable burden on the people by raising taxes and tariffs and installing smart metres to benefit private industrialists and their own party. He also asserted that unless the decisions were withdrawn the CPI (M) would continue its statewide agitation.
