Convict in Minor's Sexual Assault Case Escapes Court, Jailed for 20 Years

Samar Shabdakar, a 31-year-old convicted of sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl, attempted to escape from Unakoti District Court before his sentencing. He was recaptured within 24 hours and sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.
The assault occurred on April 9, 2022, during a Basanti Puja celebration. Shabdakar, a band member, allegedly lured the victim into a room and assaulted her, causing injury. The victim's sister raised an alarm, and he fled. The victim's father filed a complaint, leading to Shabdakar’s arrest that night.
The trial concluded with fourteen witnesses testifying against him. Shabdakar was found guilty under section 376AB of the Indian Penal Code and section 6 of the POCSO Act. He was fined Rs 15,000, with an additional three months in jail if unpaid.
