A section of a huge number of convicted terrorists, criminals and death-row convicts who had broken out of jail in Augusts last year on the back of countrywide anarchy spawned by so-called anti-discrimination movement leading to ouster from power of prime minister Sheikh Hasina might have sneaked into bordering Indian states and fanned out deep into India. This has come out in the report of a government-constituted committee submitted recently to the interim government of Bangladesh.
Sources from across the border said that, according to the report, two thousand convicts had been forcibly hizacked by unruly mob from 17 jails across Bangladesh and the mob had also looted 94 pieces of fire-arms from the security staff manning the jails. After restoration of a semblance of normalcy the government had been able to have 1200 fugitive jail-birds rearrested but as many as 724 jail birds still remain untraced. Out of the 94 weapons looted only 65 pieces could be recovered but 29 remain still untraced. Among the fugitive convicts and under-trials 69 are death-row convicts and dangerous terrorists.
Sources said that the report of the government constituted committee has suggested that these fugitive convicts and under-trials are involved in the umpteen number of thefts and dacoities across the country. But the security forces have not yet been able to rearrest them and among weapons recovered by police and security forces in the course of operation many have been found to have been looted in the wake of the mob uprising in August last year.
The report has expressed concern over the non-arrest so far of the dangerous terrorists and convicts sentenced to death and the spurt in crimes across Bangladesh has been attributed to their presence among members of the public. There is a grave suspicion expressed in the report that a section of the dangerous terrorists and death-row convicts have infiltrated into India , specially West Bengal which, under the persistent misrule of Mamata Banerjee, encourage infiltration from Bangladesh to boost her party’s vote-bank but the union home ministry in Delhi is deeply concerned over the issue . At present many Bangladeshi infiltrators are being deported across the border but whether such groups of deportees include the fugitive Bangladeshi criminals and terrorists is unclear.
