Dharmanagar Government Degree College, one of the premier higher educational institutions in North Tripura, turned into the epicenter of a student agitation on Tuesday afternoon. Scores of students staged a fierce protest inside the college campus, voicing long-standing grievances over the acute shortage of functioning toilets and inadequate sanitation.
The protest intensified as students locked the main gate of the college today and blocked the adjacent road, raising slogans and demanding immediate redressal of their issues. Protesters alleged that the condition of toilets is appalling, with no proper cleaning or access to drinking water, a crisis particularly affecting female students.
Adding to their concerns, students highlighted the lack of textbooks and others reference books in the college library, severely affecting those from economically weaker backgrounds. A more serious allegation was directed at the Political Science department, where only two professors serve over 2,000 students. Alarmingly, one of the professors is reportedly being considered for transfer, further fueling student anger.
The students warned that unless their demands, especially recruitment of sufficient faculty, are met promptly, the protest will continue indefinitely.
Amid the sweltering heat, several students fell ill while participating in the demonstration. Vehicular movement on the road adjacent to the college came to a standstill, causing major inconvenience to public and private commuters.
"This fight is for justice, for our future," said a protesting student. As the situation unfolds, Dharmanagar College’s protest now casts a spotlight on deeper systemic challenges plaguing Tripura’s higher education sector.
