In a shocking incident that has raised serious questions about the law and order situation in Tripura, a vehicle from the convoy of Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Dr. L. Murugan, was hijacked in broad daylight. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon, near Udaipur in the Gomati district of Tripura.

According to sources, the convoy was returning from an event at the College of Fisheries in Lembucherra when the hijacked vehicle, bearing registration number TR01AY3670, got separated from the main convoy. A senior government official was reportedly traveling in that vehicle. When the vehicle lagged behind, police escort vehicles moved ahead, assuming all cars were following.

The vehicle was intercepted by unknown miscreants near Chottakhola and the driver, identified as Mohammad Toiyab, was forcefully taken along. Later, the car was found abandoned near the Assam border, but the driver was still missing. It has been reported that the hijackers stole over Rs 46,000 in cash, along with the driver’s mobile phone and official identity card. The driver was later released near a tea estate in Habiganj, Bangladesh, from where he managed to inform the authorities.

Initial police investigations reveal that the hijackers used a fake escort vehicle and fled the scene towards the Indo-Bangla border after abandoning the official car. The driver was subjected to hours of harassment and threats before being released.

Police have detained a suspect named Satyajit Kumar Saha, who is currently being interrogated. Authorities have launched an intensive investigation and are working to identify the remaining culprits.

The incident has caused considerable embarrassment to the state administration and sparked concerns over the security arrangements for visiting dignitaries.
